Backyard chickens were one of the first things we got when we moved to our little cottage on our acre of land in 2022. We raised them from chicks and held them often, and made sure they became used to us. We wanted them to pets as much as we wanted their farm fresh eggs!
They are a tight-knot flock that loves their Eglu Cube chicken coop & run, though they free range a large part of the day.
They love bananas, blueberries, tuna, mealworms, and apples. Additionally, they love to poop on our porch and dig holes in the garden beds and woller around in them.

Are Backyard Chickens Right for You
Here’s what I think…
How Expensive are Backyard Chickens
The cost of keeping chickens varies. Initially, there are expenses related to setting up a suitable coop and run to provide shelter and protection for the chickens, including bedding materials and feeders. The cost of purchasing the chickens themselves also factors in, with different breeds and ages varying in price.
Ongoing expenses will high-quality feed (scraps and free ranging full-time lower this cost), bedding replenishment, and medicines if needed.
The joy of keeping chickens as pets and the fresh eggs they give you outweigh the costs, in my opinion. If you sell their eggs you can break even or occasionally even make a profit!
But a lot of us who keep backyard chickens just like knowing where our food comes from and enjoying their companionship.
